Independent Analyst Firm Recommends That Business Intelligence Professionals Consider Agile BI Out of The Box

Composite Software Cited Among Eight Vendors of Metadata-Generated BI Applications That Reduce Development Time and Effort

SAN MATEO, Calif. — May 3, 2010 Composite Software, Inc., the data virtualization performance leader, today announced it is listed among eight vendors in a newly published report, “Agile BI Out of the Box,” (April 2010) from Forrester Research Inc., an independent research firm.  The report concludes, “Agile BI is clearly here to stay and succeed, since most traditional, non-Agile BI platforms and applications will be increasingly challenged to keep pace with a world moving at lightning speed.”

Traditional BI applications developed in the 1980s to address the transformation of high data volumes into actionable information are not agile by design, and have failed to keep pace with the ever-increasing and ever-changing information demands of today’s enterprises.  Packaged BI applications were introduced to deliver more agility, but, they have not proven to be the panacea.

According to the report, “Forrester sees an emergence of a new generation of metadata-generated BI applications that BI professionals should consider—not as a replacement for traditional BI, not yet—but for specific use cases such as complementing traditional BI, generating data marts from the enterprise data warehouse (EDW), and delivering rapid BI application prototypes.”

Composite Software’s data federation or enterprise information integration (EII) approach is one of five metadata-generated BI applications defined in the report.  According to the report, “Since they [Composite Software] do not generate a physical data warehouse but rather create virtual views (virtual data marts) directly connecting to source data bases and applications, ETL, DW schema and data cache, and semantic layer are actually the same thing, eliminating the need to build three separate components.”

The report contains a quote from a customer about the benefit of Composite Software’s approach to Agile BI:  “And a senior BI architect from a large European pharmaceutical company using Composite Software fosters a ‘yes’ culture by eliminating up to 50% of business requests by first trying them out in a virtualized environment, and only after consistent usage will he move new data structures into the company’s physical DW.”

“BI agility is the number one reason we use Composite Software,” says Peter Green, director, Business Integration, at Pfizer, Inc.  “Because Composite’s data virtualization middleware helps us dynamically integrate our diverse BI and data environments, we are able to respond more rapidly to business change.”
